Hanging Out at No Rio @ Cuchifritos
August 8 – September 12, 2009
A fixture of New York's Lower East Side, ABC No Rio supports a wide range of activities that range from art exhibits to a Zine library, printshop, dark room, computer center and hardcore punk shows. A community space that has maintained its anti-corporate values, it has also fostered like-minded artistic and activist endeavors from Food Not Bombs to Time's Up to the Hungry March Band. Soon No Rio's existing structure will be torn down to make way for a new building. Taking place from May-October 2009, Hanging Out at No Rio is project that invites nine visual artists to explore No Rio on the eve of this watershed moment. Throughout August and September, the artists will partner with Cuchifritos to engage the public in a series of events and activities related to No Rio’s history, its place within the community and the changing face of the Lower East Side. Transforming the gallery into a basecamp for dialogues with No Rio volunteers past and present, workshops, events, and tours of the Lower East Side, the artists invite the public to to consider what No Rio has been and what it will become.
